Apache Plans for Open-Source Java

Officially introduced on Friday, the concept (dubbed "Project Harmony") intends to write the necessary Java 2 Standard Edition software from scratch. Members of Apache, who proposed the idea, also have plans to construct a Java virtual machine, complete with "libraries" and testing software, to be available under the Apache open-source license.
