Open Source movie ready!
After months of work the Orange team has finally finished working on
the realization of the first fully open source animation movie, Elephants Dream. 3D modelling, animating and rendering has been done with Blender, the open source multiplatform 3D software. During the film's development, several new features, such as hair and fur rendering, were added into Blender especially for the project; the next version of this software, most probably numbered 2.42, will be updated with, among the rest, all the features specifically developed for Elephants Dream. The film's content will be released under the Creative Commons Attribution license, so that viewers may learn from it and use it however they please. The DVDs will contain all the production files (3D models, textures, animation) in addition to the final movie, in both PAL and NTSC. High resolution versions will also be delivered.
Ton Roosendaal, Blender creator and chairman of the Blender Foundation, is the producer of project orange, responsible for planning, overall coordination and “big picture” decisions. The project is a co-production of Montevideo and Blender Foundation. Substantial contributions to the projects came from the presales of the DVDs. To acquire the DVDs or learn more, check the Project Orange or the Blender websites.
