Revenue or Revolution: The Linux Explosion

In recent months, there is one thing that’s on my mind - open source revenue vs. revolution. Seriously, while the revolution is well underway within the open source community, one has to question which of these two previously mentioned ideologies will, in the end, be the deciding factor on the future of software and OS' as a whole.

Based on what I have seen, the current motivation for Open Source Software (OSS) development has been almost consistently an act of passion. Whether it is to offer a viable alternative for the end user or to meet the needs of person or persons creating it, somewhere along the line there is some level of passion as the motivating force.
