OOXML vs. ODF: What a Week!

What do global wiki projects, assistive technologies announcements, efforts to buy Wikipedia access, major platform announcements, simultaneous competing toolkit releases, and public calls to arms to defend Europe against being "railroaded" all have in common? They're all part of just one week's head-butting between the proponents of ODF and Microsoft, as OOXML embarks on its effort to become an ISO/IEC-adopted standard (a status ODF already enjoys).

Some of these initiatives have years of planning and millions of dollars behind them, while others are grass-roots projects launched by community members that have spent hundreds of hours compiling the data needed to wage a global campaign to effect the ISO/IEC result, all in record time. Together, they represent a new way of waging commercial warfare that can make strange bedfellows of diverse constituencies. Originally found only in the open source software space, this dynamic has now extended into a standards war involving the public interest as well.
