The enlightenment window manager has gone from pushing the limits on graphics to a now all encompassing e environment with supporting libaraies, APIs of all sorts, and a rapidly growing feature rich window manager in e17. A new channel has been created at LXer for enlightenment related announcements, tutorials and articles. To get things rolling, a quick look at enlightenment related websites and some shortcuts to documentation regarding enlightenment 17.

First and foremost, e16 (the previous version of enlightenment) is still under active development; mostly maintenance, however, several features have been added over the last few years such as easier configuration and built in eapp transparency. Most Linux distributions and BSD systems have packages for e16. Otherwise, check out the sourceforge repository to download e16.

E17 has three methods of installation, some Linux distributions are unofficially tracking it:

As noted on the enlightenment website these are development snapshots and as such may have problems.

There is also the download area of enlightenment.org which has their own development snapshots.

The third method for installing e17 is via source. Instructions can be found on the e CVS page. There is a script at rasterman's website called get_e.sh which has the build order at the top of the script and can be used to kick off a checkout and build of e17.

The enlightenment group has a variety of resources such as websites and the #e channel on freenode:

  • Enlightenment.org - main website
  • Rasterman.com - Raster's website. If you crawl around in the news and files sections there is a lot cool stuff to play around with.
  • Get-E.org - Hosts e themes, ETK themes, some documentation, backgrounds (some of which are animated), one off eapps and other fun stuff.
  • EliveCD - a LiveCD Debian distro with e17 built in for those who would like to test drive first.
