I mean half the reason I like Linux distro's, is because there is no fscking, stupid flash filled sites, with no real content but sucking down CPU, and bandwidth, just so I can read the fscking lyrics of a song I heard on the piece of sh!t radio.

I hate Flash as much as the next guy. But I do like running FLOSS software (as opposed to proprietary) and then there's:

Well... that's just for personal entertainment.

How about sites like this which are critical to my clients' business operations:

http://www.frymaster.com

I'd call GPLFlash a necessary evil. :-(

But peragrin, how do you really feel? ;)

I don't mind Flash when it's used for a good reason. It's actually pretty efficient of bandwidth and system resources, when it's done right. But, as you so articulately stated, in the wrong hands it's crap.

tuxchick: plus it can be disconcerting to the other people on the street. The other day I opened my trench-coat and instead of the usual shock there was laughter. I think it was the cold wind...

Check out this fine example of misuse. I live in SoCal, and was attempting to search for a location to get lunch. As soon as I hit the site I closed my browser in a state of sheer terror...

tuxtom, I think you should report that site as a terrorist act. **shudder**

I don't know what's worse. The fact that it used god awful flash, or it was a real company and not a joke.

sbergman The question is why? That same site could be done with regular html, and javascripts, a few image maps, and weigh in less. I will put it to you this way. I have a 3mbit cable line, hooked up to my powerbook over a wireless router. It took 6 seconds to download that whole shebang and then I could watch the download of different sections. Granted it took a merec two seconds for each 60kb page but come on.

I have seen good uses for flash, they make better presentations. if you want to show off your wares. other than that I consider flash like Hypercard of old. Sure it's useful, but takes way to much work for minimal gain.

Peragrin,

I agree. Both sites are examples of horrible abuse of Flash. There is absolutely no reason for either site to require it. In fact, although Startrek.com won't let you in without it, I've no earthly idea where it is even used for anything remotely siginificant. (In defense of the Frymaster site, I will say that they are very responsive when I contact them about a problem rendering in Firefox, unlike most other sites I deal with.)

But you might as well ask why we need OpenOffice.org to be able to read MS Office formats. I mean, the whole world should just use an open format, right? So why don't we just tell the world not to use MS formats and stop wasting our time supporting .doc, .xls, etc?

However, after I become Emperor of the Known Universe(tm), Macromedia is second on my list of scheduled corporate terminations.

Oh thank you emperor. Your a kind and gentle leader.

Just so you know that evil macromedia is hiding now though. They are now called Adobe. I like some of adobe's products so can you just sort of slice them in half with a bolt of lighting?????
