I'm glad to see that one country is allowing software license resale. I remember back in the late 90's there were all kinds of second-hand software stores. You could get all kinds of great stuff for cheap. I bought a lot of games, and got last year's database and spreadsheet apps for dirt cheap, instead of hundreds of dollars.
Then overnight they all went away. I assume the BSA, MS, and other big players got together and bought
some laws to drive them out of business, though I don't know for sure what happened. Most businesses have huge investments in software licenses, but cannot count them as assets because they are forbidden to re-sell or transfer them. Just one more anti-competitive, anti-customer action that the DOJ and the mainstream press totally missed, and why do customers, especially businesses with staff lawyers, let them get away with it? |
