While the 'sysinstall' installer does make installation simpler, it is not for the complete novice. I would recommend PC-BSD for the first-time user. I had no problems installing it on my multi-partitioned HDD. PC-BSD is FreeBSD 6.1 STABLE + KDE + PBI. PBI is a 'point-and-click' installer similar to Windows' InstallShield Wizard. It's great for the newb who just wants to download and install the binary packages. More experienced users can still download and install from source using the BSD 'ports' system. Gentoo users will feel right at home with Ports as Portage was based on Ports. One point newbies should note: unlike Linux, FreeBSD cannot be installed on an extended partition but must be installed on a primary partition. I have no experience with DesktopBSD, but I believe it is FreeBSD 5.5 + KDE. Freesbie is a LiveCD version of FreeBSD. |
