> Free processors, free video cards... What's next? - dcparris Logically, entirely free motherboards should be next. What chips are missing for that? I'm guessing free northbridges. Now, if only someone could find a way to make chips without making an expensive $100.000 master. Imagine you could have a machine where you input a chip design and a wafer and get IC's out the other end. Even if these IC's would be 10-25 times the cost of regular mass-produced IC's you'd have an instant hit. It would make experimentation with new designs and tiny production runs possible. The free chip design market would explode overnight and Free Computing from the base hardware through the bios to the OS an applications would be a reality. |
