This is truly an interesting story as it parallels symptoms apparent in other rule by commitee distributions. I truly hope that Daniel steps back into a leadership position or finds someone who can take on the role of benevolent dictator for life. Regardless of what many of us think of other notable distros with the BDFL management they do prove that it is a singularly effective way to keep your eyes focused on the brass ring.

Will Gentoo fall if the Gentoo Foundation disappears extremely unlikely. Will it prosper if the current level of direction and leadership continues as it currently is? Again extremely unlikely.

Another distro with a BDFL: Slackware, with Patrick Volkerding at the helm. Granted, he has lots of help, but he makes the final decisions about what goes in and what gets replaced or left behind.

The funniest commentary on Daniel's second involvement, and subsequent un-involvement, with Gentoo was on LWN: http://lwn.net/Articles/224615/

I'm not sure what he really wants here. It seems he wants the peasants to arise in mass acclaim and demand his return, but he also says he does not have much time to make a significant contribution to gentoo. It sounds like he wants some praise and recognition more than anything else.

Not like its unearned and not like we don't all want some.

I totally agree dino, it just sounds to me like he's sending out a somewhat mixed message. Does he want Gentoo back, or just a bit of "you did a great thing, thank you, and we're going to try harder to bring it back to state of extreme coolness."

Where he says he has no want or interest in any kind of take over play.

I see that. Just venting a little frustration and trying to spur the horse forward.

Well, even if he wasn't looking for it:

Daniel, you did a great thing. Thank you. I hope the Gentoo-eeestas step up up to bring everything back to a state of extreme coolness.
