The Daemon, the GNU & the Penguin ~ by Dr. Peter Salus http://www.groklaw.net/staticpages/index.php?page=2005101323... One good reason that SCOX and MSFT's claims, that no one could have written a complete "unix" without stealing from them, are utterly bogus is that it has been done before. Many times. I almost bought Coherent myself, but couldn't justify the money without an application in mind. One of the great benefits of Linux is that excuse for not trying it does not exist. |

I was actively considering Minix myself at the time, and holding my nose about its warts. Thank $deity Linus came along. I (so far; haven't finished reading it) heartily recommend this history of Linux. It's got warts, and reads pretty fanboy-ish, but it's fun for zealots like me and appears reasonably accurate. I've seen a lot worse. |
