Oh my. Such colorful prose. Where is Professor Henry Higgins when he's needed?

Yet I agree with every sentiment.

Sure, they all have their good points - and when you've tried them all, and are ready for the ultimate, SuSE will be ready and waiting for you.

When you use SuSE, you know SuSE.

When you use Slackware, you know Unix.

Is that a clever way of saying slack forces you to do a lot more low-level work to configure things? No argument there, been there, done that. I used slack nonstop from 93 to 97, and SLS before that.

That was back when men were men, and if you wanted sound with your doom, you needed to recompile your kernel with the correct IRQ, DMA channel and I/O address for your soundblaster - and configuring X meant putting on a pot of coffee, sitting down with your monitor manual and working out modelines.

At this stage, I'm secure in my linux knowledge, and have no trouble using a distro that makes things easier ;) But if you really want to learn the nuts and bolts, why not go all the way and do lfs or rock linux?

"If you wanted sound with your doom..."

The sound of my doom was an odd buzzing noise that didn't stop until I hit the reset button. The unclean-shutdown recovery back then was uuuuugly. I had a lot to learn.

Mamphred, do you know why I drink only rain water and pure grain alcohol? It's because of purity of essence.

Use Debian, Mamphred. For our precious Essences.

Is that true? Switching from BSD to Linux (Slackware actually) wasn't that straightforward as you'd think if both were UNIX. Problem is, if you know Slackware, you know stuff beyond UNIX.

It's more true than it is for any other distribution of Linux.

Slackware's not all that difficult. Same with Debian.

Slackware, especially, has all these little "cheater" command-line scripts like xwmconfig, netconfig, mousecfg, pkgtool that really help. There are a few hurdles in Slack, like getting your user account(s) in the right groups and turning on burning privileges in K3b ... and adding applications or doing updates to Slackware isn't as quick or easy as with Debian, but it's far from rocket science.

I've never programmed anything in my life, but I'm sure able to install and maintain Slackware -- especially if I don't ignore updates for a few months, and even then, slapt-get and Gslapt can make it as easy as Synaptic.

Just to be able to install and run Slackware more quickly and easily, I turned to Wolvix Hunter, a live CD that installs easily, includes Gslapt for updates and generally just runs with no attention whatsoever.

OK, I've been guilty of pimping suse at times but seriously, a number of distros have much to commend them, and given the diversity evident in the linux community, there's never likely going to be one true distro for everyone.

So try what sounds interesting, find a distro that you really like, and learn it well. It may turn out to be slackware, debian, ubuntu, fedora, suse, or any of the other interesting minor distros, but there are plenty to choose from and a lot of interesting stuff out there, and if you can get away from the crappy monopolist for good, it's all a win.

Sounds like a very good idea, herzeleid. Now, if every Linux user would act according to your comment, they would have a lot more time for useful things. Like figuring out how to read a Windows Media Player 11 EULA on Linux (or VMWare with cracked XP but no WGA) to attend users of it how the RIAA seems to be a party in that license...

This is probably a spambot test. Our little leet friend might even be a friend of bmora! So cute, investing all that time and energy into pointless spamming. Just think, lil spamsters, if you put that same effort into honest work you'd be making a living!

It's funny you should mention that because I think I was having one of those when I coded the page.
