I'm not sure what the point of this piece is. There is already a lot of cooperation between the BSDs and Linux. Reverse-engineered drivers are shared, and the devs have even modified their licenses to allow freer distribution and sharing. Sure, the flamey gossipy stuff makes the headlines. Meanwhile, a lot of work goes on and a lot gets accomplished. |

And there's quite a bit of cooperation between the various BSDs. They share code all the time. It's not a bad thing for Linux users to check out one or more of the BSDs just to get a feel of what else is out there. |

I checked out freebsd and netbsd in the 90s - they both ran like well oiled machines, and were more complete and polished than linux - but netbsd, in particular, had just the faintest hint of a musty odor, so to speak, while linux, while rough, buggy, and missing some pieces, had the momentum and the excitement. So I threw my lot in with linux, betting on the future. It goes without saying that it's matured, and is now a very nice server platform, and out of all the unix OSes, it's arguably the best overall for desktop/laptop usage. |
