Take a look at your 500GB hard drive: what's taking so much space? Videos. Pictures. And other already compressed data. You might gain some space on your mail archive, but it's still disappointingly little. I claim that these days it's not worth it... |

For backup schemes, I would say compression is a good idea, especially if the device has high endurance. :) |
