grub (know also as grub-legacy) in it's current form don't know about LVM, I agree. (you need a /boot partition) But grub 2 (not completely stable yet, I think) has the support : http://grub.enbug.org/LVMandRAID?highlight=(LVM)

Yes. Grub2 has support to put /boot on LVM2. I'm going to try that on my new server when it comes in a few weeks :-)
