Nice quick overview. A friend got me addicted to the free Norton Commander Lite way back in the DOS days. I don't know how I'd survive these days without Midnight Commander at my disposal. Oddly enough, I've never felt very comfortable with any gui NC clone (Windows or *nix). They just don't feel right....

P.S. tracyanne: Prod the Mandriva folks for dropping MC from the install. :)

Personally for multi-pane FM I use the same one as for single pane. Konqueror, split left/right top/bottom a terminal session and samba/network services support. Lets me open 6 panes 2 of which are local 4 others Samba and the only drawback is network speed when moving things around drag and drop from one computer to another.
