KDE 4.2 (Stable) running on Windows 7 Build 7000. Almost all apps running (games, dolphin, kgames, kate, etc) fine. Amarok crash at startup with an error. Plasma disables Desktop Compositing. http://techunits.com/content/list_all/74/kde |

When I see a demo of KDE 4.2 that show of some of the things you can't do in Windows, like pinning a window on top, like shading a window, then I'll be impressed. Every single demo we see of any desk top is merely the flashy stuff that doesn't enhance productivity. I just whatched the demo of KDE 4.2 on Windows 7 beta, and my first thought was, well so what, Windows does that too. If I can get those really useful Linux/Unix thing in KDE on Windows, I'll install KDE on my work desktops, then I'll be able to do the things I really miss being able to do. If I can't get those things, then there is no point, I may just as well stick with Windows, I turn the flashy stuff off anyway. |

TA, what about the Compiz/Fusion demos on YouTube? Do they count? |

Most of the compiz/Fusion demos I've seen concentrate on the bling, very, if any, deal with what it can do to improve your desktop usability experience, they tend to be all Flash (no pun intended) and no substance. Yes Windows can't do that, but there is more to using a desktop than wobbly windows and all dancing all singing menu icons. Showing people the bling just turns them off. Showing them how something is useful is much better. |

My preference for Linux as a desktop is a completely subjective. I couldn't really "demonstrate" it to anyone else. Yes, things are slowed down by doing (right now) video transcoding, YouTube, Konqueror with 5 tabs, Kmail, Konsole with 6 tabs some of which are logged into two other systems here. And they're all usable. I can tell they're slowed, but nothing stops and there is no instability, in fact tomorrow or next week or next month it will work just as it works right now while not being rebooted or turned off. How can I put that into a tutorial? |

Bob, I think you just found the mythical second step in developing Open Source Software: 1. Release a program. 2. Wait for N T, where N is an integer and T is a unit of time between hours and years. 3. Profit! |

500 bonus points to whomever read step #2 in the above post and didn't immediately think "Windows NT". |
