I have been using jaunty since it has come out and all I got to say is wow. I love redhat to death and administer both solaris and redhat boxes but neither of those two have anything on jaunty.

Jaunty is really really really good IMO. With apt-get it has a definite advantage over the other two IMO.

Now we just have to get U.S. businesses to run with jaunty.

Any small business that doesn't look at running ubuntu to run their business is crazy IMO. If you want to spend money you can even pay for support from Canonical.

In that case, it would speed up things, if Canonical produced some video material like the one linked below, because the general population (including non-technical decision makers) does not like to do "creative" research and read -- the information has to be easily available and digestible.

Maybe they already did make something like this, but I did not see it.

If you're talking servers, I don't see Ubuntu denting RHEL and Solaris in the U.S.

And once you're talking about paying for support, Canonical isn't giving such a deal and doesn't appear to have a reputation or infrastructure that compares to what Red Hat offers enterprise clients.

But if the admins like Ubuntu and can get the brass to sign off, I can see it happening in individual installations.

I write about desktop Linux all the time, and I use it for the majority of my work. Ubuntu could make some inroads there, but it (or any other portion of the Linux community that wishes to try) needs to go beyond those of us on forums like these and educate the public about what a Linux distribution can offer over Windows in terms of cost, functionality and manageability ...

The idea of a repository with tens of thousands of packages as opposed to either paying for everything individually or downloading whatever you can find on the Web -- it's a mind-blowing idea that I don't think most non-Linux users know about.

Even though I'm not a betting man, I'd take that wager.

What is funny is I heard the same argument about RedHat when it was starting out and not making a dent in HP, AIX, or SUN servers.

I see Ubuntu server making a big dent if it ever gets packaged for the home/small business user, with some kind of cool setup wizard or GUI for quick file sharing, simple firewall, email, and groupware. All the pieces are already in place, what's missing is a slick management interface. Deals like this one with Alfresco are just the ticket.
