I would suggest getting real worried when there are screams* that Gnome 3.0 is ready for prime time and it should be the default not an option. Why? Just because ...

Apart from that:

Can somebody explain to non-Gnome users like me - what's it that's all the fuzz is about? Is Gnome Shell more than just a new skin with some new capabilities?

The Gnome Shell mockups put me in mind of Ubuntu Netbook Remix. But UNR allows the user to switch to the old Nautilus desktop. Whether the new Gnome Shell will do the same, or not, is research I don't feel like conducting.
