I like the idea of WebP (although the name sucks IMHO). It promises a big bonus for the web: alpha layer transparency. JPEG can't do that. PNG can, but PNG files are big because it's lossless, not lossy. Now if some smart people come up with a way of storing lossless images in files as small as JPEG of WebP.... |

Quoting:although the name sucks IMHO At least it's consistent with WebM. Quoting:Now if some smart people come up with a way of storing lossless images in files as small as JPEG of WebP.... I don't think the theory of information gives you much hope here :) Although PNG is a very conservative approach (in the spirit of "correct is better than fast") so we cold have some progress here, if someone is willing to take the pain of pushing a new standard (Google again?). |
