Is linux mint anything other than ubuntu with different programs installed? It seems like you're eating away at the userbase & media attention which would otherwise be going towards ubuntu..arguably where its needed since canonical is the primary developer of linux mint.

Nope. Mint is nowadays based on Debian, not Ubuntu.

Nothing. Knowing what apps to install is what's hard.

Canonical did not develop much of what is in Ubuntu.

Is Ubuntu anything other than Slackware with different programs installed? If you mean you could start with Ubuntu, install only Ubuntu packages, and end up with Mint, the answer is no, the Mint developers do a lot of their own work.

And that is a problem why?

There was a version released that was based on Debian. For now the main version of Mint is still based on Ubuntu.

Supposedly including a number of bug fixes the Canonical folks haven't deemed worthy of attention.

I have to give Canonical props, though. They reliably have a minimum of one bug that kneecaps me.

It's part of why my latest and greatest system is still at 9.10.

AND -- my 9.04 mythbox keeps popping up "Your release is no longer supported" messages.

I know there's some reason why people like this crap, but I'm not sure what it is.

Maybe somebody with a whole lot of time on their hands will create a live CD with scripts that will install any one of 20 top Linux distributions over the network.

hmm, Steven, unetbootin does do something similar.

I'll have to try that again. My last unetbootin foray didn't work so well.

Would you settle for one that allows you to boot any of "Debian, Ubuntu, Damn Small Linux, Knoppix, Fedora" over the Internet?

There actually appear to be two options for this, both with similar writeups at HowtoForge.

and
