I've installed zram-config, and rebooted, not sure yet what difference it will make, won't know that until I start using the recording and editing software and hydrogen etc

I believe Ubuntu has a zram package. Simply installing the package will enable it. On Debian, it's a manual installation. That's okay, since it's just script and config files to enable it. The trick is getting a pre-compiled kernel with zram support. The stock Debian kernels don't have it. The liquorix kernels do. To see if there's any zram in use, just do:

cat /proc/swaps
