Right now, the Debian installer has check boxes for "laptop", "ssh server", and such.

How about a check box for "init type"?

Seems the only reasonable thing to do. Don't put off users by forcing them to install systemd and then laboriously uninstall/install an alternative. If they want to stay even slightly credible, it's the only way to go.

Hmmm...

Uninstall systemd, install SysV init. In that order.

Then sit back and watch the fireworks.

The fireworks will get worse as more and more things are built with dependencies on systemd and the the things that it has swallowed up...
