If you refresh the article page enough times you might find yourself reading the article around a Microsoft ad talking about the TCO (total cost of ownership) of Windows 2003 vs Linux. I find this extremely ironic since you couldn't possibility find a cheaper way to run an OS than running it from digital media, especially the example of the firewall and IDS (intrusion detection system). Let's break down why: 1. You don't have to pay for the distribution since it is free 2. You don't need to pay anyone to install the distribution since it is just a matter of putting in a CD and pressing power 3. You don't have to pay anyone to apply patches since the OS is read-only and it is immune to OS changes and upgrading means sticking in a new version 4. You don't have to buy any additional software that will never be used since most live distros are geared towards a target audience (why would you pay for Office on your server when it doesn't have have a monitor?) This combination of ad + article makes Microsoft seem like the kid who didn't get the cookie. |
