GUI != Easy interface

The important thing to note is that a GUI doesn't automatically make a job easier. The GUI should provide that extra info to make it self-documenting and use its advantage of being dynamic (f.ex: update a combo box to reflect other choices made). Basically the GUI needs to be designed with aunt Tilly in mind. A lot of geeks are scared that doing so will dumb down the application, but it's not about removing options, it's about letting aunt Tilly easily mentally remove the options she doesn't care about. If she (or _me_ in many cases) see something marked out as -recommended- then that's what we'll choose unless we know we need something else. Of course it isn't easy.. But it's crucial for the success of our software. Motto: Power tools with powerful interfaces! |
