Gartner defines the market in dollar terms. Thus the ballon they report in IBM's numbers refers to dollars, not servers. In reality Sun saw shipments increase and prices drop, IBM saw shipments fall but held pricing steady for everything except some newly introduced low end gear.

IBM is a whole lot less forthcoming. See: http://www.ibm.com/investor/4q03/ for a wide range of fine obfusications.

In both cases, however, it's better the check the (later) detailed 10Q/K filings. There you'll discover that both companies experienced quite significant drops in Unix server sales over the period while Sun's increased.
