One thing that many people miss when comparing Linux to an os like windows it is that in any modern linux distribution you are getting much more than an operating system. What you are really getting is functionally equivalent to buying windows, office, photoshop and thousands more applications to do everything under the sun. Most distributions maintain security errata for all of the packages contained in their distribution rather than just the kernel and base system. In order to accurately compare the two you would have to add the security/bug fix data for all of the common applications that a user might use to the data from the base windows OS. |
