Helping others get Fedora

When I find an outstanding distro, such as Fedora, I prefer to buy the media from an on-line vendor as a way of showing my support. Most of the time the money goes directly to the vendor, however, I happened upon the Sponsored Media Program today and found a vendor who participates in this program.

Nice fallbacks

There was a kernel upgrade today, so I updated everything and rebooted. Upon reboot I found that xorg failed to start. Luckily I have screen, mutt, elinks, irssi, wget and a few other CLI apps installed to get things done in case xorg breaks.

Review: Zeam Launcher

As I was browsing through the feeds in liferea, I happened upon this little gem. Being a fan of home replacement apps for Android devices, I opened it and began reading. That article contained little information about Zeam Launcher so I installed it from the Android market. Here's what I found.

Becoming a Fedora contributor

I became a Fedora contributor after experiencing what I felt was a highly polished distro and outstanding support from the Fedora user community. I had attempted to become a contributor for another distro, but the process required to do so ended up being so long and difficult that I just gave up and moved on. I felt that, if they really wanted help, their join process would have been much easier and their people would have been more helpful.

Using graphical su in Fedora

There are times that I would like to open an app as root user without having to use the command line in order to do that. I learned of a nice app in the Fedora repos called beesu and I will show you how to set up a menu entry to be able to use this nice app.

Android market going down the drain?

I am on a quest to rid the android market of certain apps. For the past year I have seen the Android Market fill up with apps of lascivious and copyrighted content. You can search the Android Market for the following keywords and see quite a bit of content that I feel shouldn't be available to customers, and definitely not to children: nude, sex, porn, 18+, adults only, boobs, the android market seems to be turning into a porn hub. I am also seeing developers release apps which are entire books, fashion photos and videos which are surely copyrighted. These apps also violate the Android Market Content Policy for Developers available here.

Installing software in Ubuntu

I regularly sit in the #ubuntu channel on the Freenode network helping folks with their Ubuntu issues and one of the things I see people often doing is attempting to install software from source before researching other installation methods.

Get full versions of website on an Android phone

A user agent is a client application implementing a network protocol used in communications within a client-server distributed computing system. The term most notably refers to applications that access the World Wide Web, but other systems, such as the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), use the term user agent to refer to both end points of a communications session.

Stupidware

The computer has become an integral part of life these days, and along with them comes the need for good software. There are many ways to write good software but the best software begins with a good set of options. Among those options, in my opinion, should be a setting to turn off "needless, idiotic prompts that serve no purpose other than to waste our time".

Dear Netflix

I use Ubuntu Linux as my sole operating system and I have learned that the Netflix Watch Instantly service is not available on Linux operating systems. I had heard that the Boxee project offers a workaround but the Netflix app is not currently available in Boxee. I understand that the Roku player, which you recommend, can stream Netflix service to a television. The Roku player runs Linux yet you don't offer your Watch Instantly service on Linux computers.

ASTRO - Android file manager

The ASTRO File Manager helps you get the most out of your Android-powered phone. The Android operating system is designed to be very open and flexible, giving its users the chance to do more things on their phone than ever before. ASTRO helps your phone reach its full potential by giving you the tools to manage your phone.

Adding the Debian menu to Window Maker

I have used Window Maker for some time and have always made my own custom menus. However, the current maintainer of the Window Maker window manager gave us a small tutorial on how to add the Debian menu to a custom menu. The menu package must be installed prior to beginning this tutorial, check your software repositories. Thanks to John H. Robinson, IV (aka jaqque).

dxtop - Android home alternative

dxTop is an alternative to the Android home interface. When you install dxTop it will install as an alternative to the default Home interface allowing you to choose which on to use. Pressing the Home button on the phone prompts you to choose which Home interface to use and you can set dxTop as the default so you won't have to choose anymore.

Amazing Android Apps - Text Edit

I have been using Android-powered phones since the release of the g1 and have always been happy with the Android Market. One of the first things I did after buying the g1 was make a list of what I felt were "essential apps". One of the tools I needed was a text editor, because, let's face it, with a "mini computer" in your pocket you'll need a way of creating and editing text files. After testing several text editors I found that Text Edit was the best.

Window Maker - Your NeXT window manager

Window Maker is an X11 window manager originally designed to provide integration support for the GNUstep Desktop Environment. In every way possible, it reproduces the elegant look and feel of the NEXTSTEP user interface. It is fast, feature rich, easy to configure, and easy to use. It is also free software, with contributions being made by programmers from around the world.

KDE, one year later

Back in November of 2008 I attempted to migrate to KDE. That migration proved to be a lesson in futility. Today I installed Kubuntu Kubuntu 9.10 on three different computers to see how much progress this once awesome distro has made in a year. This is what I found:

A dozen GNOME themes

I wasn't quite happy with the current selection of gnome themes so I decided to learn how to create my own themes. In learning how to create themes I also learned how to port themes from WindowBlinds skins to GTK/Metacity. This meant that I could port all of my favorite WindowBlinds skins to the GNOME desktop. I'd like to show you some of the themes that I have recently ported.

Ten Of The Best GNOME Themes

When I first began using Linux back in 2001, the themes I saw were beautiful but they don't compare to some of the themes I'm seeing lately. I'd like to show you some themes which will, in my opinion, spark more interest in GNOME themes.

It's Their Nature

For years Microsoft has been spreading lies and FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) about Linux in the hopes that they can keep Linux from being widely adopted. Their latest round of lies is the anti-linux propaganda used in training some Best Buy and Staples employees. My opinion is that the reason Microsoft uses these tactics is because their software is so bad that it cannot stand on its own merits.

System Rescue - My Favorite LiveCD

One of the things I love about GNU/Linux is the existence of LiveCD's. A live CD or live DVD is a CD or DVD containing a bootable computer operating system. Live CDs are unique in that they have the ability to run a complete, modern operating system on a computer lacking mutable secondary storage, such as a hard disk drive. Live USB flash drives are similar to live CDs, but often have the added functionality of automatically and transparently writing changes back to their bootable medium.
