Trolltech and Opera target Linux for mobile and home use

Embedded Linux tools vendor Trolltech AS has announced a strategic partnership with web browser software vendor Opera Software ASA through which the two companies will develop Linux products for the mobile communications and home entertainment markets.

MySQL Clustering and Security

I wrote briefly about securing MySQL last week and Andrew-J2000 suggested he was looking for a bit more depth into the clustering side of the scenario. It may mean nothing to you, but the Wienux distribution is now being rolled out in Vienna. The Austrian capital city of Vienna kicked off its soft migration to open source software on the desktop on Tuesday.

With Java and open source technology now as intertwined as they are, it's no surprise that many announcements out of last week's JavaOne conference in San Francisco had either a Linux or an open source slant.

City of Vienna Chooses KDE

As mentioned on the official webpage of the City of Vienna: a customized version of Debian with KDE, dubbed "Wienux" was chosen as the official alternative to MS Windows for the 18,000 PCs of the city. It is up to the individual workers to choose if they prefer a KDE Desktop or a Microsoft based system. The officials expect that about 4,800 machines can run KDE in the short term. Additionally, K3b is the official burning application of choice for "Wienux".

The 6th annual Debian Conference will be held at the Computer Science department of the Helsinki University of Technology in Espoo, Finland from July 9th to July 17th 2005. Debian and Free Software developers from countries around the world meet for a week-long series of intensive development, seminars and workshops. It is highly technical in nature.

Jonathan Oxer was surprisingly candid about the state of affairs at Linux Australia, the organisation he leads. In his July 1 blog entry, Oxer openly questioned the group's survival, pointing out the obvious -- Linux Australia is stuck in no man's land.
