The Terrible State of WiFi in Linux

  • OSWeekly.com; By Matt Hartley (Posted by gsh on Feb 28, 2007 9:53 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Linux
Articles like this just kill me. Granted, this piece was written a while back, and even considering the date in which the piece was first put together, it remains the single biggest mess that I have ever laid eyes on. Linux and wireless is a mess, period.

Why Microsoft Should Acquire Linux

  • CoolTechZone.com; By Gundeep Hora (Posted by gsh on Feb 26, 2007 8:28 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Microsoft
Alright, I’m going to say this. I think Microsoft should acquire Linux. Now, I understand that Linux is not as independent of an OS as Windows; it’s a movement towards the open environment for applications; therefore, the standard M&A process won’t work.

Dell Takes Linux Demand Seriously

  • MadPenguin.org; By Matt Hartley (Posted by gsh on Feb 26, 2007 6:50 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Linux
Considering the inclusion of Red Hat with Dell on the server level, you might have thought that this would have happened a long time ago. Well, better late than never, I suppose. I have just discovered that Dell is looking into bundling the big three Linux distributions (OpenSuSE, Ubuntu and Fedora) to those who might be interested.

Candid Comments to Bill Gates

  • OSWeekly.com; By Matt Hartley (Posted by gsh on Feb 26, 2007 5:12 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Microsoft
"Apple hasn't done any of those things." Bill, seriously, Apple has not needed to do any of the following as they do not make a practice out of egging on hackers to exploit their OS. That and Apple’s market share is not as large as Windows, therefore the time spent targeting you and yours offers a larger bang for the effort.

Haiku: Long Live BeOS

  • OSWeekly.com; By Brandon Watts (Posted by gsh on Feb 22, 2007 12:18 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Linux
If you were asked to name a few operating systems, the first ones that would fly forth from your lips would probably be Windows, OS X, and possibly even Linux, but unless you’re trying to impress someone with your knowledge of all things related to operating systems, that’s likely about as far as you would go.

Cuba and Open Source: A Touchy Subject

  • MadPenguin.org; By Matt Hartley (Posted by gsh on Feb 21, 2007 10:42 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Linux
Unless you have been living under a rock in the media sense, surely by now you have heard the news of Cuba embracing open source and all that it has to offer. Unfortunately, much of the mainstream press is likely to once again point to open source and claim that it is anti-free enterprise, which could be a problem.

Open Source University: Getting Students Involved

  • MadPenguin.org; By Matt H. (Posted by gsh on Feb 15, 2007 11:31 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Linux
Theory versus practice - I don't think there’s a better solution in making sure that software developers are ready for the challenges of tomorrow than catching them while they are still in school, and then plugging them into an open source software project.

Vista Gets Taste of Linux Medicine

  • OSWeekly.com; By Matt Hartley (Posted by gsh on Feb 14, 2007 12:03 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Microsoft
It's humorous and sad, all at the same time. Vista users are closer than ever to the woes that used to plague many Linux users. The fact is that if you need NVIDA graphics to work with your favorite game, you just may be out of luck here.

Novell and GPLv3: Let the Beatings Begin!

  • MadPenguin.org; By Matt Hartley (Posted by gsh on Feb 13, 2007 11:07 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Linux
Unless you live in a vacuum, you must’ve heard the talk about Novell finding itself under the Free Software Foundation's microscope. What's interesting is that it looks like under the current GPLv2 (GPL2) guidelines, Novell hasn’t done anything wrong. So, what's all the concern about then? Simple, it's called GPLv3 (GPL3).

Corporate Fight Against Open Source

  • OSWeekly.com; By Matt Hartley (Posted by gsh on Feb 13, 2007 10:02 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Linux
Remember during the Dot Com boom when sites used to display which browser you should use in order to best utilize their website? Quaint, annoying and even a little narrow minded. Those of us who have been yearning for a blast from the past will be thrilled to learn that Wal-Mart is apparently doing this in the year 2007. Wait, it gets better...

Rhapsody: A Music Service for Linux Users

  • MadPenguin.org; By Matt Hartley (Posted by gsh on Feb 12, 2007 8:53 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Linux
The idea of Rhapsody offering a Linux music service is fantastic, except for the fact that they have opted not to allow the full functionality offer to those in the Windows world. It really is a let down for Linux users, but is this something that we can blame Rhapsody for?

OpenBeOS: It's Alive and Well

  • OSWeekly.com; By Matt Hartley (Posted by gsh on Feb 7, 2007 1:16 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Reviews; Groups: Linux
As we witness the release of Windows Vista to the world at large, I thought it was interesting to see the evolution of BeOS coming back into the spotlight. Today, the spirit of BeOS remains alive and well in OpenBeOS' latest incarnation, known as Haiku.

Open Source: Understanding the Core Principals

  • MadPenguin.org; By Matt Hartley (Posted by gsh on Feb 7, 2007 12:11 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Community
Earlier today, I stumbled upon an article that was filled with reader comments stating that the sellers of open source software are to be dismissed as scam artists. Those in this crowd that actually understand the legal bindings of the individual license(s) and definition of open source generally pointed out that they feel such sales are unethical - just not illegal.

SuperTux: Reloaded

  • MadPenguin.org; By Matt Hartley (Posted by gsh on Feb 6, 2007 1:43 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Reviews; Groups: Linux
As luck would have it, GetDeb.net is back at work after the holidays, and while browsing their latest package additions, I happened upon an update to one of my all time favorite Linux games - SuperTux. For the uninformed, SuperTux is a fantastic 2D video game that was made available for all the popular distributions; in addition, to a number of other platforms including desktop and mobile.

Build Your Own Ubuntu

  • OSWeekly.com; By Matt Hartley (Posted by gsh on Feb 6, 2007 11:32 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Reviews; Groups: Ubuntu
With the release of Vista and the curiosity people have with trying other operating systems in light of its release, I have found myself knee deep in a number of operating systems over the course of the past few months. BSD, Linux, even OS X.

The Importance of Video Settings on Linux

  • MadPenguin.org; By Matt H. (Posted by gsh on Feb 1, 2007 5:07 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Linux
It's maddening. For someone who is trying make a daily use of what is to be considered a beginner friendly distribution for the first time, most options leave a lot to be desired for the uninitiated. More often than not, new Linux users find that everything works great at first only to discover that setting up something as common as a dual-head monitor configuration requires editing your xorg.conf file. If you are coming from a non-Linux environment, this can be a fairly frightening proposition.

Combining Linux Kernel with Windows

  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Linux
Sometimes when I have a few minutes to spare, I enjoy running stats with Google Trends. During one of my random searches, I came across something that really stood out to me. It was a quote by Larry McVoy of BitMover and an ongoing collaborator with Linus Torvalds, the person behind the Linux operating system.

Staying In Sync with Linux

  • MadPenguin.org; By Matt H. (Posted by gsh on Jan 30, 2007 9:00 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Linux
These days, it seems like we are being bombarded with options for keeping our lives in sync with the events happening around us. For years, PDAs and now even more so, Pocket PCs have become a mainstay for anyone whose life is dictated by the events happening on their calendar.

Video Editing: From Windows to Linux

Without a doubt, one of the biggest problems that I had when I was transitioning from Windows to Linux was losing immediate access to Adobe Premiere Elements. To the video beginner, it can present a little bit of a learning curve, but for someone like me, it’s irreplaceable. Short of buying an Adobe Premiere, I could not have been happier.

Linux and The Desperate Need for Tax Apps

  • OSWeekly.com; By Matt Hartley (Posted by gsh on Jan 23, 2007 4:31 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Linux
There is no question about it, Linux and tax software have not been the best fit over the years. As expected, the usual excuses were being used: there are not enough Linux users to warrant a Linux version, or if people want, there is always the online options made readily available to those who chose not to.
