Halfway there. And then half of that. Theoretically, only a quarter of the way there, but halfway done ;)

Prepping For Setting Up VCS NFS Clustering On Solaris 10

Today we're going to look at preparing your Solaris 10 system for clustering NFS (The Network File System ... the "The" is silent ;) on VCS (Veritas Cluster Server). In many ways, it's the same as setting it up on previous versions of Solaris, but it differs in many ways, as well. Apparently, I spend way too much time looking at this issue in many many ways ;)

The work never ends. Thank God lots of other people have the time, creativity and good-will to share some of the hilarious and expert animation they do. I found this bad boy on YouTube.com and, even though it has nothing to do with Linux or Unix, it does satisfy that Anti-Windows funny bone and is actually worth watching of its own merit.

Yes, he appears to be using a Mac, but he could still be running any number of Linux distros ;)

Beginner's Shell Scripting On Linux And Unix: Why And How

Recently I was asked a very simple question that I'm pretty sure I've never addressed in this blog over the mass of posts already churned out. Shell scripting has been addressed, to a great degree, on this blog, but (even the beginner stuff) has included a presumption of certain knowledge. It's easy to forget what it was like back when I started working on Linux and Unix, so I often make the cardinal sin of assuming everyone has already asked this question and had it answered.

Having Fun At Other Solaris Sys Admins' Expense

Mean spirited? No. Funny and, perhaps, cruel. Of course. Today I'm speeding around, working my arse off so that I can work all weekend (When does it end? ...oh yeah; with the worms ;) and I wrote this little shell script (in Solaris' /bin/sh) to lighten the mood a little. It's another in a string of a thousand fake error messages, but it worked pretty well for my purposes. I made sure to install it up front in the /etc/rc2.d directory (from JumpStart) so that any admin watching a new installation come up for the first time (to verify its integrity) would be guaranteed to see it. Man, it was fun until I had to fix the problem and pretend I had no idea what happened ;)

Compiling Perl Into Binary Code On Linux And Unix. Cool, But...

An interesting concept, that's been around for a while. Neat, but...

A Simple Approach To Grabbing Streaming Audio Playlists With Unix Or Linux

As long as you do this for your own enjoyment, I'm pretty sure it's ethical. Today's post is borne of the fruits of my spare-time labour ;) I've spent most of my life in the Chicagoland area (after doing a whirlwind tour of of the world as an Army brat) and have been into rock and roll since about the time I grew my fetal ears :) As everyone who lives anywhere near Chicago knows, it's got a great variety of free radio on both the AM and FM dials. Formats change, call numbers change, signal frequencies fluctuate, etc, but there's almost always something to love on at any given moment.

I found the following video on a site I'd never seen before called Funny Or Die which hosts a series by the name of "Yell For Help With Stewie Bronson." If this doesn't make you laugh, you may be dead inside. Or, maybe it's not your sense of humor ;) Give it a shot and check it out. At worst, you'll die knowing that you wasted those entire five minutes :)

Finding A Process's Idle Time On Linux And Unix

Today, I finally found some time to make a little headway on this project (which should be a lot simpler than it is). Basically, what I'm looking to do is create a way to track specific process's idle times at any given point in time on any given Linux or Unix system.
