If Torvalds quit Linux would anyone notice?

If Linus Torvalds stepped away from his position as coordinator of the Linux kernel, it is unlikely many people would notice, according to the man himself.

KDE 4.0 Reviewer Reminders

KDE 4.0 is NOT KDE4. All the happy hoopla over this release is too soon. Ultimately todays release of KDE 4.0 is a developers release, not a stable public release.

Destroying the GPL from the inside

How do you destroy the GPL? Honestly I don't think it will be done, but there is a way. Simply put the GPL is a copyright license, which is it's strength and it's achillies heel. For years publishing companies, our friends at the RIAA and MPAA among others have pushed for longer and longer copyright terms so that they can reap the rewards from other people's work for a longer period of time. So why not turn things on their heads a bit? Actually, what I'm talking about has already been proposed.

GPLv3 - The Year in Review

The Year in Review Report is intended to give you a summary of what has happened to the GPLv3 over the past 6 months, and review some of our highlights for the year.

A good how-to on getting dx9c working under wine. For linux gamers we know that this is a major headache for us. Now we can snag some of those games that we have relegated to the *sigh* windows only stack and fire them up with little to no problems. ~Az

Phoenix's Hyperspace: Linux-Based Instant-On For Laptops

Now the bad news. Even though HyperSpace is Linux-based, it doesn't look like you'll be able to freely install your own open-source applications of choice in the environment, which I suspect that's mostly to prevent tampering. It's also not clear if the HyperSpace code will be made public, but I'm fairly confident if they don't do it someone else will be more than happy to devise something similar that is open.

Insecure by Default

Guess what, I can walk up to your Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Debian, etc desktop installation and take complete control over it without needing a single password. Thats right, root access simply by sitting down at your computer. Why is it nearly every single distro by default leaves this gaping security hole open?

This has nothing to do with Linux or Open Source, but it does show the hazards of upsetting your network admins. Is it reality or is it humor, sadly I can see it happening, and its downright funny.

Fair Use: Affirmative Defense or Right? Do I Have to Choose?

P.J. does an incredible job of research and decoding to human speak, drawing an inescapable conclusion that DRM itself is unconstitutional and violates copyright laws. Something we can all cheer about.

OpenSolaris vs. GNU/Linux: Deathmatch or Lovefest?

One of the recent posts that Jonathan made was in response to a flame by Linus. In his response to accusations, by Linus, that Sun was being disingenuous about truly open sourcing its ZFS file system, he mentioned that not only was Sun going to open source everything, but that they were going to do it under GPL3.

3 moments in Vista that make me consider Linux

While I definitely think some elements of Vista are definite improvements, 10 months of experience has shown me there are some things that just annoy me to my very core. Here are the three things that most make me wish I had the strength to move over to Linux — full time.

Using kvm, or kqemu, to speed up qemu

Have you ever wanted to play with a new distro without having to burn and then reboot into a liveCD or do an install into a spare partition that you may or may not have?

Why I refuse to call it GNU/Linux

When listening to others talk about GNU/Linux it always strikes me as odd the argument that is used. That the Linux kernel was made usable by the marriage of the GNU tool set to it so therefor it should be called GNU/Linux as it is a blending of the two and Linux is only the kernel. On the face of it this argument makes sense ... if one doesn't think about it too deeply.

Novell's Victory Over SCO Could Have Downside For Linux Users

Linux backers are reacting with glee to all of this news. An anonymous blogger who goes by the name 'Pamela Jones' on the anti-SCO Web site Groklaw said over the weekend that he or she would "eat chocolate" to celebrate Novell's victory. But hold the Godiva and Toblerone for a moment. If I'm a Linux user, do I really want SCO v. IBM to be called off without a definitive ruling on SCO's claims?

I was almost sure that there would be no way to synchronize my Windows Mobile Outlook information (contacts, tasks, schedule, etc.) with Ubuntu. But after a bit of tinkering this morning I'm amazed to report that I am able to synchronize with Ubuntu! [I've been wanting to do this myself, to date I have been doing file transfers via ftp with my pocketPC. Cant wait to try]
