Xandros today announced it will join Microsoft and other companies to build and ship open source translators between documents stored in Ecma Office Open XML and Open Document Formats. The translators, being developed through the Open XML/ODF Translator project, will be made available to Xandros users via the Xandros Networks update facility.

Novell today announced new enhancements to SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time and unveiled new partnerships that expand the ecosystem around Novell's low latency Linux solution. SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time, the only enterprise-class, open source real-time operating system offered by an enterprise Linux distributor today, is a high performance, customizable, fully supported solution for running mission-critical applications that require deterministic processing and speed.

With todays release of the CUPS bugfix/security fix update this will mark the last security update for SUSE Linux 9.3. It is now officially discontinued and out of support.

Check out the new Flash Player 9 Update 3 beta, also available in Linux flavor. The most notable features of interest to Linux users: Fullscreen mode works on Linux, and the entire thing has been reworked as a native GTK app that communicates with the hosting web browser using the XEmbed protocol.

Canonical Ltd., the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, announced more details on Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded Edition at Computex 2007 in Taipei. Following discussions at the Ubuntu Developer Summit in Seville Spain and a great response from the developer community generally, the target specifications and technical milestones for the project have been agreed.

Dell replies to extended warranty claims on Ubuntu systems. "Recently, folks like Slashdot and others reported that we are no longer offering extended warranties or CompleteCare on Ubuntu-based systems. User johnnyk submitted an idea on IdeaStorm asking us to bring back warranty options for these systems. The short answer—we will soon."

The Movable Type Open Source Project was announced in conjunction with the launch of the Movable Type 4 Beta on June 5th, 2007. The MTOS Project is a community and Six Apart driven project that will produce an open souce version of the Movable Type Publishing Platform that will form the core of all other Movable Type products.

Today Microsoft Corp. and Linux platform provider Xandros Inc. announced a broad collaboration agreement based on a set of technical, business, marketing and intellectual property commitments.

ATI has released version 8.37.6 of their Linux display driver. New features are AMD Catalyst Control Center version 1.0. This version of the Catalyst Control Center provides a 3D aspect page which allows for the adjustments to be made in 3D applications such as graphic-design applications, CAD applications, and games. Logging out of a session to the graphical login manager no longer crashes the Xserver.

Fedora 7 has been released and represents the culmination of several goals that Fedora has spent the last few releases (spanning the course of at least 2 years) working to achieve. This release includes significant new versions of many key components and technologies such as KDE 3.5.6, GNOME 2.18, Xorg 7.3 and Linux Kernel 2.6.21.

Denver’s Flying Dog Brewery today announced plans to release what is believed to be the first “open source” beer to hit the market in the U.S. “Open source” is a term most commonly used in the software industry and refers to any program whose source code is made available for use or modification as users or other developers see fit. In this case, Flying Dog’s Open Source Beer Project will allow beer drinkers and homebrewers to create or recommend modifications to the recipe.

Later today, Dell will offer U.S customers three different systems with Ubuntu 7.04 installed: the XPS 410n and Dimension E520n desktops and the Inspiron E1505n notebook. These systems will be available by 4pm CST today. Starting price for the E520n desktop and the E1505n notebook is $599; the XPS 410n starts at $899.

Microsoft Corp. and Novell Inc. today announced that 12 new customers have signed up to take advantage of the companies’ collaboration. These customers, from around the globe, are 1blu, Arsys, Fujitsu Services Oy, Gordon Food Service, Gulfstream Aerospace Corp., hi5 Networks Inc., Host Europe, Nationwide, PRISACOM SA, Reed Elsevier, Save Mart Supermarkets, and state of California, Department of Fish and Game.
