A new operating system war is brewing on desktop PCs, and it's not Windows vs. Mac, or even Windows vs. Linux. This time, it's Linux vs. Linux. Red Hat and Novell — already foes in the market for Linux server software — are taking their fight to the personal computer. Commercial vendors and Linux distributors are listening to the masses -- and fueling the hype -- with plans to shore up a viable Linux desktop solution for the enterprise. IBM, for one, has made noise about moving to Linux on its desktops internally. Sun has released its Java Desktop System and Novell/SuSE and Red Hat have also made some rumblings lately about renewing their commitments to a Linux desktop. Novell has already brought in a couple of heavyweights with its acquisition of Ximian last year and SuSE Linux AG in January. Not only did Novell snare the popular Ximian technology, but it brought aboard luminaries Nat Friedman and Miguel de Icaza. Friedman will deliver the keynote at this week's Real World Linux Conference, and in this interview, he discusses Novell's commitment to the Linux desktop, barriers, misconceptions and the importance of success stories.

This review is a brief overview and first look of Red Hat's Fedora Linux. Never doubt Red Hat to produce a top quality Linux distribution. Since Red Hat is moving more towards the enterprise and away from the home, they have released Fedora which is the proving ground for Red Hat Linux Enterprise. Basically, all things that could be enterprise start in Fedora. Fedora is a non profit, unsupported OS with the backing of Red Hat.

This update fixes a remote denial of service vulnerabiliy[1] in Apache web-servers which have mod_python enabled (this is not the default in Conectiva Linux). An attacker can crash an apache child process by sending a specially crafted message that triggers the bug in mod_python.

The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2004-0189 to this issue[2].

Lineo Solutions has contributed two more embedded Linux kernel ports to the CE Linux Forum (CELF) source tree. The ports support mobile phone and automotive telematics chips from Hitachi spinoff Renesas. They include power management, real-time, and other performance optimizations for consumer electronic devices.
