...If you want to use Test 2, simply boot off of the Test 1 CD, and then when it gives you the boot prompt, swap out the Test 1 CD for the Test 2 CD.

A project to produce a free, dual-kernel, real-time Linux distribution has achieved its first stable release. The Open Components for Embedded Real-time Applications (OCERA) project's 1.0.0 release supports real quality of service scheduling, CAN bus systems, and fault-tolerant and real-time Ethernet, along with standard Linux functionalities.

Fedora adds support for SELinux

Red Hat's free Linux distribution, Fedora, has added support for the security enhanced modules created by the NSA and known as SELinux, a media release from the company says.

Zend releases PHP5, gets influx of new funding

In a sign that the marketplace sees lots of promise in PHP's growth prospects, Zend Technologies has completed a new venture capital infusion of $6 million. The latest investment, from venture capital fund Index Ventures, together with previous investors Walden Israel and SFK Technologies, brings to $12 million the total of VC investments in Zend in less than six months, since November 2003. Israeli-based news service Globes [online] reports that Zend may actually get $2 to $3 million more in funding before the round closes. And as if to justify investors' faith, the long-anticipated PHP5 First Release Candidate is finally for download from Zend.

Wal-Mart Stores, the world's largest retailer, has begun selling Microtel PCs that come with Sun Microsystems' version of the Linux operating system. "We are seriously considering Wal-Mart to be the PC supplier for Sun Microsystems," Jonathan Schwartz, head of Sun's software group, said in a meeting with reporters here Tuesday. Separately, he said an unnamed European bank is using Sun's Linux software for 10,000 tellers.

A vulnerability was discovered in squid version 2.5.STABLE4 and earlier with the processing of %-encoded characters in a URL. If a squid configuration uses ACLs (Access Control Lists), it is possible for a remote attacker to create URLs that would not be properly tested against squid's ACLs, potentially allowing clients to access URLs that would otherwise be disallowed.

In a new report, Is Linux More Secure Than Windows? from Forrester Research Inc., based in Cambridge, Mass., Computing Infrastructures Senior Analyst Laura Koetzle finds that both Windows and Linux can be deployed securely. Microsoft Corp., however, fixes security problems the quickest—which is a good thing, since it also has the most major security holes.

Business Week has published an interview with Michael Sudol, general manager of Motorola's Linux phone division, discussing Motorola's decision to use Linux in some smartphones. The interview suggests Linux-based phones will appear on the global market -- possibly including the U.S. -- just before the Holidays.

Mbedthis Software has added support for the PHP scripting language to its high-security HTTP server for embedded devices. AppWeb 1.1 implements PHP support as a loadable module, and is currently available as a development release. Mbedthis offers AppWeb under GNU and commercial licenses, along with support and security enhancement services.

AOL to Release New Netscape Update in Early Summer

The upgrade will be a "'point' release based on the latest Mozilla code" and "will be made available in the very early summer timeframe." Speculation that an update was in the works began last week, when the San Francisco Bay Area's Mercury News paraphrased an AOL spokeswoman as saying that "there will be future versions of Netscape that are essentially repackaged upgrades of Mozilla."
