We tested five Linux desktop solutions: Libra Computer Systems Ltd.'s Libranet 2.8.1 Flagship Edition, Lindows.com Inc.'s LindowsOS 4.5, Lycoris' Desktop/LX, MandrakeSoft Inc.'s Mandrake Linux 9.2 and Xandros Inc.'s Xandros Desktop OS Version 2-Deluxe Edition. None proved to be the clear front-runner. Rather, three of the solutions — the ones from Lindows.com, Lycoris and Xandros — proved evenly matched and ideally suited to replace either Windows or Macintosh systems with ease.

Mozilla Firefox: Meet Mozilla's smaller, faster little brother.

The TechTV staff has turned into a cult of Mozilla worshippers. Leo even recommends it to viewers at least twice a week for its superior browser features, email and newsreader, and built-in chat client. Today, however, we're going to recommend another (gasp) great free alternative to Internet Explorer. It's called (drum roll please) Mozilla Firefox.

Gentoo alert: Libxml2 URI Parsing Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities

A buffer overflow has been discovered in libxml2 versions prior to 2.6.6 which may be exploited by an attacker allowing the execution of arbitrary code.

Debian alert: New Linux 2.2.19 packages fix local root exploit (arm)

Paul Starzetz and Wojciech Purczynski of isec.pl discovered a critical security vulnerability in the memory management code of Linux inside the mremap(2) system call. Due to flushing the TLB (Translation Lookaside Buffer, an address cache) too early it is possible for an attacker to trigger a local root exploit.

Mozilla Backup 1.3a Released

Pavel Cvrcek (a member of CZilla team) wrote in to tell us that he has released Mozilla Backup 1.3a. This latest release automatically detects external profiles and adds better support for Mozilla Firefox 0.8 and Mozilla Thunderbird 0.5.

Red Hat registers 3.8 million shares

Red Hat filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday for the sale of 3.98 million shares of stock. Red Hat will not receive any proceeds from the sale of the shares.

IXP425-based SBC runs Linux, targets networking apps

Gateworks Corp. has released a single-board computer (SBC) based on Intel's IXP425 network processor. The company is aiming the Avila Network Platform at wired and wireless network routers, bridges, and access point applications, and is providing Linux support.

GnomeMeeting.org has released a 1.0 version of its H.323 compatible videoconferencing and VOIP/IP-telephony application, following three years of development. In conjunction with its first major release number, the organization has begun accepting donations. GnomeMeeting 1.0 enables audio and video calls to remote users with H.323 hardware or software, such as Microsoft Netmeeting.

Despite claims by some - most notably SCO's CEO Darl McBride - that free software is some sort of communistic plot against America, open, collaborative programming on the basis of shared code is closer in spirit to the US political system.
