- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Fedora Legacy Update Advisory

Synopsis: Updated screen resolves security vulnerability Advisory ID: FLSA:1187 Issue date: 2004-01-26 Product: Red Hat Linux Keywords: Security Cross references: https://bugzilla.fedora.us/show_bug.cgi?id=1187 CVE Names: CAN-2003-0972 - -----------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Topic:

Updated screen packages are now available that fix a security vulnerability which may allow privilege escalation for local users, and possibly remote attacks or getting control of another user's screen.

2. Relevant releases/architectures:

Red Hat Linux 7.2 - i386 Red Hat Linux 7.3 - i386 Red Hat Linux 8.0 - i386

3. Problem description:

The screen utility allows you to have multiple logins on just one terminal. Screen is useful for users who telnet into a machine or are connected via a dumb terminal, but want to use more than just one login.

Timo Sirainen has reported an integer signedness error in ansi.c for GNU screen 4.0.1 and earlier, and 3.9.15 and earlier, which allows local users to execute arbitrary code via a large number of ";" (semicolon) characters in escape sequences, which leads to a buffer overflow. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2003-0966 to this issue.

Users of screen should update to these update packages, which contain a backported security patch that corrects this issue.

Fedora Legacy would like to thank Timo Sirainen for discovering and disclosing this issue, and Jason Rohwedder and Christian Pearce for providing a backported fix for Red Hat Linux 7.2, 7.3, and 8.0.

All users are advised to upgrade to these update packages, which contain a backported security patch that corrects this issue.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata relevant to your system have been applied.

To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run:

rpm -Fvh [filenames]

where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the desired RPMs.

Please note that this update is also available via yum and apt. Many people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use yum issue:

yum update

or to use apt:

apt-get update; apt-get upgrade

This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate RPMs being upgraded on your system. This assumes that you have yum or apt-get configured for obtaining Fedora Legacy content. Please visit http://www.fedoralegacy.org/download for directions on how to configure yum and apt-get.
