Top Story ---------------------------------------- Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring released

Our top story this issue is of course the release of Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring, the latest and greatest Mandriva Linux release. Featuring all the latest software (KDE 3.5.6, GNOME 2.18, Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 2.0, and OpenOffice.org 2.1), the innovative Metisse enhanced desktop, significant improvements and fixes to the Mandriva configuration tools and enhanced hardware compatibility, 2007 Spring is the best Mandriva Linux yet. To find out more about 2007 Spring, see the official page and the Wiki page. You can take a tour of the new features in 2007 Spring and check out the Release Notes and Errata. Then you can download Free 2007 Spring or One 2007 Spring, buy the Discovery, Powerpack or Powerpack+ editions from the Mandriva Store, or join the Mandriva Club and enjoy downloads of the commercial editions of 2007 Spring as part of your membership privileges. http://www.mandriva.com/en/linux/spring http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Releases/Mandriva/2007.1 http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Releases/Mandriva/2007.1/Tour http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Releases/Mandriva/2007.1/Notes http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Releases/Mandriva/2007.1/Errata http://www.mandriva.com/en/download/free http://www.mandriva.com/en/download/one http://store.mandriva.com http://www.mandriva.com/en/community/resources/club

Mandriva News ---------------------------------------- Mandriva Flash 4GB released

The second new release of the issue is the updated and expanded Mandriva Flash. Mandriva Flash is quite simply a USB Flash storage drive with Mandriva Linux 2007 pre-installed and bootable from the drive, allowing you to carry a full copy of Mandriva Linux around with you wherever you go and boot it from almost any PC. The initial 2GB Mandriva Flash release was a great success and sold out several production runs. Now, following user feedback, we have made Flash even better: it now comes on a 4GB key, and you can decide how much space is dedicated to the system and how much is free space for users, allowing you to set the perfect balance between having space to install extra applications and having space for your files and documents. This new revision has also been updated with all the latest official updates for Mandriva Linux 2007, and we will be providing an upgrade path for Flash to be upgraded to Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring. Don't delay - buy yours today! http://store.mandriva.com/product_info.php?products_id=277

Mandriva Club site updated

Mandriva in the news ---------------------------------------- Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring Reviews

The first crop of reviews of the new Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring have arrived. A review by Susan Linton was published in Distrowatch Weekly, which took a close look at the appearance and features of 2007 Spring and concluded "it's a nice system taken as a whole". Susan also took a quick look at Mandriva Flash and decided that "Mandriva Flash is definitely the way to go if you're looking for a portable system". Ladislav Bodnar, the Distrowatch editor, also chipped in his report on upgrading to 2007 Spring, reporting that he "had no troubles at all with Mandriva 2007 [Spring] while using KDE with Compiz".

Linux.com also took a look at 2007 Spring, and were very impressed. Their reviewer tested out all the new features of 2007 Spring Powerpack and praised its package selection and hardware detection before concluding that "Powerpack Spring is a fantastic Linux distribution that just works".

Finally, LunaPark6 took a look at the Free and One editions of 2007 Spring. They had some problems using hardware which required proprietary drivers with the Free edition, but were very impressed by One, saying "if you want a Linux distro that is easy to use and has a bright colorful look, [2007 Spring One] would make a great choice". http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20070430#feature http://www.distrowatch.com http://distrocenter.linux.com/distrocenter/07/05/03/1756213.shtml?tid=109 http://www.lunapark6.com http://lunapark6.com/mandriva-2007-spring-edition-20071.html

Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring virtualization guide

One of the big improved features of Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring is virtualization support. 2007 Spring includes several virtualization tools, particularly the VirtualBox desktop virtualization application. However, many users aren't sure what they could use virtualization for, or how to do it. We published a guide on the Mandriva Club which gives you a few ideas on how virtualization might be useful to you, and walks you through the use of VirtualBox step by step. It also includes short guides on using Xen, VMware Server and qemu. http://club.mandriva.com/xwiki/bin/view/Main/SpringVirtualizationGuide http://club.mandriva.com

Interview with Sebastian Trüg, lead developer of k3b

k3b is one of the most important applications for many Linux users. The immensely popular and fully-featured CD / DVD writing application has been a mainstay of the standard Linux desktop since its early releases. Since last year, Sebastian Trüg, the initial author and present lead developer of k3b, has been employed by Mandriva both to work on k3b and to work on the Nepomuk desktop project. We asked Sebastian a few questions about k3b, Mandriva and Nepomuk and posted his answers on the Mandriva Club. http://club.mandriva.com/xwiki/bin/view/Main/TruegInterview

Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring configuration guide

The redoubtable Falko Timme extended his long running Perfect Desktop series of setup guides to Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring with this extensive article on installing and configuring the distribution with a range of commonly used applications. If you're looking for a helping hand setting up your new 2007 Spring system with a range of popular software, take a look. http://www.howtoforge.com/the_perfect_desktop_mandriva_2007_spring_free

Erratum ---------------------------------------- Correction to promotional e-mail regarding Mastering Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring

A correction: in a mail entitled "All your questions about Mandriva Linux answered at once!" which was sent to those who choose to receive promotional Mandriva emails, we wrote that the Mastering Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring guide was "written by the Mandriva documentation team". This is not correct. The guide was written by NeoDoc, an independent company. The former Mandriva documentation team set up NeoDoc after the release of Mandrake Linux 10.0, and have produced all the documentation for releases since then as an independent company. We apologize to them for the error. http://www.neodoc.biz

Mandriva Security ---------------------------------------- Better, stronger, faster

And finally, we remind you once more to keep your Mandriva Linux system up-to-date with all the latest official updates. Since the last newsletter, there have been security fixes for packages such as Samba, PHP, Python, ClamAV and KTorrent, and important bug fixes for the kernel and other packages. As always, you can use MandrivaUpdate to install updates: see this page for more information. http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Docs/Basic_tasks/Installing_and_removing_software#Installing_updates:_MandrivaUpdate
