Linux Format has an interview with Bruce Perens. Having founded the Open Source Initiative and Linux Standards Base, Perens is a well-known spokesperson for the Free Software community, and in this interview he discusses the problems with his UserLinux project, the rise of Ubuntu, and why figureheads are still important in the open source world.
Aggregate Optimization & Tuning Part II
n part II of a small research project, the kernel has yet to be tuned (but not too much :) and a few ideas regarding how to test the optimized bits versus unoptimized bits. On a side note, I did manage to trash a few kernels during the process which made things exciting. In the next (and probably last) portion the tests themselves as well a few concluding thoughts (and hopefully not more questions...).

Package management meets version control in rPath
rPath is a young company that is rapidly becoming a leader in package management innovation. At a time when traditional package management systems such as APT and dpkg or Yum and RPM are adding elements such as signed packages and plugins, and projects such as Autopackage and Zero Install are focusing on easy-to-use interfaces and giving ordinary users the ability to install desktop applications, rPath takes a top-down approach and focuses on simplifying release management.
UWB Standards MADness
The wireless space has increasingly been the site of bloody standards battles. In committee after committee, rival camps vying for victory creatie independent organizations outside the IEEE process to gather allies and cheerlead from the sidelines.
Performance Tuning UNIX Systems
Be ‘nice’ to your computers and examine some general guidelines for tuning server performance. A computer is like an employee who does tasks for you -- it's a good idea to keep from overburdening them. Keep this from happening by using the UNIX ‘nice’ command.

The Internet: Time to Bulldoze and Start Fresh
We Need Gates, No Not Bill
Since cleaning up the public Internet is futile, I propose a gated Internet community, a PrivateNet with fences and moat monsters and gun towers to keep the riff-raff out, with no connection to the public Internet. Sure, it will cost money. But spam and malware cost users billions of dollars per year; how many billions depends on who you believe. But it's still a pile of money. So why not build a nice PrivateNet that is clean, and fast, and free of garbage? Then we can go about our business and do actual useful things.
The first step is all members of the PrivateNet must prove their identities.

FUDCon and folding the Fedora Foundation
BOSTON, MASS. -- Last Friday, after the LinuxWorld Conference& Expo, I sat in on the fifth Fedora User and Developer Conference (FUDCon) at the Boston University School of Management. Some of the buzz in the halls concerned Red Hat's announcement of the end of the Fedora Foundation (about which more in a moment), but there were some good talks too.
Open source BI gets down to business
BOSTON - Open source business intelligence (BI) can flip a project budget on its head, according to a presenter at a recent LinuxWorld session.
Novell To Offer Open Source Desktop
Designed for business users who have so far been reluctant to leave the Microsoft comfort zone, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop features a fast and effective Graphical User Interface (GUI) and integrated desktop search. Until recently, any talk of a viable Linux desktop was scoffed at by many in the industry. Martin Fink, VP of HP's Linux wing and Barksdale Garbee, CTO of Open Source and Linux, told IDM at LinuxWold this year that “a general purpose Linux desktop is not likely in the near future.”
Interview with Diego Pettenò, Gentoo/*BSD developer
For those of you who don't know (and I'm sure there are many), Gentoo/BSD is a relatively unheard-of project with aims of merging both Gentoo Linux and the BSD systems respectively into one operating system. The project, which is sponsored by Gentoo Linux, has goals of creating a hybrid operating system using BSD underlyings, such as the kernel and system libraries, with Gentoo's portage system (package manager), administration facilities and design principles integrated on top.
Survey says: Open Source Tug of War: Philosophy vs Money and ...
...the results of its newest survey on Open Source and Linux development show a market that is deeply fragmented with no clear leader. When over 400 Open Source developers were asked to name the company that provides the best OSS offerings, Red Hat, Novell, IBM, Sun, and several others were named but no company was mentioned by more than 12% of the developers. Red Hat, mentioned by 11.7% and Novell, 10.5%, were the two most commonly named followed by IBM and Sun.
KOffice 1.5 Released
The KOffice team is proud to announce KOffice version 1.5. With this release, KOffice starts its ascent into the office suite hall of fame. This version sports OpenDocument as the default file format, accessibility, a new project planning tool KPlato, professional color support and adjustment layers in Krita and the long awaited Kexi 1.0. You can read more about it in the press release and the full announcement. Packages are available for Kubuntu and SUSE.
From the article: "KOffice was the first to support, and now with 1.5 the second office suite to announce full support for OpenDocument (ODF) as the default file format." I don't mean to be nitpicky, but wouldn't this just be the second iteration of ODF support? It just comes across as though there are two different suites involved. - dcparris
