The second day at the LinuxAsia 2006, the region’s premier Open Source conference and expo, saw speakers from government and industry recount experiences in implementation of Open Source e-governance projects.

Speaking at the e-Governance Forum in the convention, Dr. Neeta Shah, Director E-Governance, Government of Gujarat, informed that the state government had taken up an ambitious project, completely based on open-source, which will integrate 100 plus different department web sites, on a single platform. The project, called “e-databank’ is expected to make life much easier for the common man. Mr. Prakash Kumar, IT Secretary Government of Delhi, offered to guide other state governments in emulating the successful e-governance initiatives of the Government of Delhi.

He, however, pointed out that in some cases the IPR is not owned by them, which becomes a hindrance in transferring the code. He also mentioned the need of standardisation of basic processes and systems of data capture and citizen interaction, across the country, so that the states can share and optimize resources. He averred that open-source would be an ideal solution for citizen interface as it is regional language friendly.

When you think of Linux, what distribution comes immediately to mind? The answer will most likely be different depending on whom you ask, and for different reasons. For me, it's Slackware Linux. The reason is that it's not only the oldest surviving Linux distribution on the planet, but it's also one of the best desktop distributions going... in my book at least. Many of you would suggest SUSE, Mandriva, Linspire, Fedora, or Xandros as a better desktop choice by design, and in all respect you would be absolutely correct... but not for me. Slackware is faster, more stable, and allows me to do what I want with it without obstruction. Sure, the other distros are cool, but Slackware has some serious mojo.

Just like there are "Urban Legends" that never seem to die, so it seems there are "Cluster Urban Legends" that persist even today. We have all seen or heard them. Wacky things people say about HPC clusters. As a service to the HPC (High Performance Computing) community, and to the world at large I have decided to prepare a list of my personal favorites. Troubleshooting often involves having to watch logfiles in real time. That means using tail or a similar utility to see new messages that are added to a logfile by Apache, MySQL, X.org, or whatever program you're trying to deal with at the time. While tail is usually readily available on *nix systems, I prefer to use MultiTail whenever possible. It has some features that you won't find in tail, such as filtering and a color display, and MultiTail allows you to follow the output from a command as easily as following a logfile.
