When Sun Microsystems announced plans to integrate PostgreSQL into its Solaris operating system and offer support to customers running the software, it became a fair question to ask whether or not the news would affect open source vendors who have based their own products on the popular database.

Estonia's latest local elections, held online nationwide, included the use of open source software in electronic voting. However, experts caution that the use of Linux on Web servers does not equate to publicly viewable voting code, and the system's reliance on the Internet raises red flags.
Here's where I go out on a limb, but I think Microsoft's clearest threat still comes from Apple, though not the way most people expect. Yes, Apple is about to take Microsoft to the woodshed when it comes to Internet movie distribution. Yes, Apple already super-dominates the music player market where Microsoft doesn't even really exist. But the real jewel is one Microsoft has to lose, not gain -- the PC platform, itself.

reports - rPath Linux is shifting closer towards its first stable release: rPath Linux 0.99.0 (Beta) available. rPath Linux 0.99.0 is a lot like rPath Linux 0.70, only with fewer bugs. In particular, automount works with GNOME; OpenOffice.org has working dependencies; and firstboot, GIMP, and GDM runtime requirements have been fixed so that they will work even if group-gnome is not installed.
OSDir has put together some nice screenshots of rPath Linux 0.99.0.
