Novell: Equally supports GNOMES and KDE [ update ]
To the excitement around Novells of plans to use in the Linux products in the future GNOMES instead of KDE as standard Desktop now a careful retreat comes. Holger Dyroff, vice-president product management for the Linux platform and since 1993 with Suse employs, explained, Novell "in coordination with its customers decided, both GNOMES and KDE further in all products from Novell to the order to place". DistroWatch reports - Getting closer to the 1.0 release, the developers of PC-BSD have announced the first release candidate of the user-friendly operating system based on FreeBSD: PC-BSD 1.0 release candidate 1 is now available! This release is 'feature complete', for what was planned for the 1.0 version, and includes many enhancements and bug fixes over previous versions. It is also the first desktop based on FreeBSD 6.0.

While I have not followed this story in detail, i.e. actually reading the content of the proposed legislation I tend to look askance at legislative attempts to limit speech particularly when the conventional press/media has been so very timid. Hence, consider their petition: "Mike Krempasky of Red State and I have jointly signed a letter (PDF) urging the U.S. House of Representatives to reject H.R. 4194 -- a stealth effort to regulate online political voices by pretending to defend them. A recent slashdot and news.com article highlights the ten year nightmare for microsoft: the Internet taking over in a cheaper way, in which microsoft desktops cannot compete. My question to the free software community is: what is the answer (not to microsoft, as everyone keeps trying to fight microsoft on THEIR terms) but what is the answer to microsoft's nightmare also becoming OUR nightmare?

Secondhand Microsoft software goes on sale in UK
Microsoft Shafting Its Resellers - Welcome to the club. Here's what they say: "Microsoft has stunned some in the British reseller community by allowing a discount dealer to sell secondhand volume licenses, opening the floodgates for a used-software market." Note that this is UK only (so far), but it just might indicate someone within Microsoft wants to stop any incipient drift away from its OS. Just guessing.
Heavily updated Camino 1.0 Beta 1 browser released for Mac OS X
Camino 1.0 Beta 1 brings you a heavily updated version of the only native Mac OS X browser using Mozilla.org's Gecko HTML rendering engine. The Mozilla Organization's Camino pages state that they have "made great improvements, adding new features, improving existing features, and fixing many bugs and performance issues."

Microsoft has always had to respond to innovators in the software business and seize the PR initiative.
Ten years ago this December, I wrote a memo entitled The Internet Tidal Puddle in which I attempted to undo the damage caused by my book, The Road Ahead, published just three months previously.
In The Road Ahead I failed to mention the internet at all. The same month, Netscape had floated on NASDAQ, creating the largest ever first day gain. Clearly, there was a puddle in the road ahead. So in my memo I warned that we could either step round the puddle, or step right into it, and risk being drowned.
In 1995 none of our products made use of TCP/IP. Now, a decade later, I can safely say that many of them do.
