First look: NVU RC 1.0

NVU is the open source community's first WYSIWYG HTML editor, slated to be released shortly. After testing the release candidate software, I like what I see. It's clearly not yet the product it's capable of becoming, but it already has a lot of functionality, as well as a lot of promise.

The adventures of installing SuSE Linux

I read a fascinating article in The Inquirer (not the one from Florida, the one from the U.K.) last week. In it, IT gadfly Nick Farrell documents his attempts to install SuSE Linux 9.3 on his home computer (see editorial links below). You'll appreciate it, because it will reflect the opinion of many of your users should you install the full bore of Novell Linux Desktop on their machines.

Two views on VIA's open source release

It appeared the open source community had a bone thrown to it by VIA, which announced open driver source codes earlier this month. However, those experienced in providing the needed Linux drivers, including developers of the Unichrome Project, said there are still proprietary roadblocks in using VIA's released drivers with Linux. They add that while their pure open source project is successfully bridging the gap, VIA would have been better off participating in the community effort rather than forking code for the sake of its press releases.

  • Story Type: News Story
This article has a singularly inappropriate headline, and it merely reveals what hypocrites high-tech execs are. By their own personal actions they make working as an engineer in certain industries economically and personally unrewarding, then they ponder publicly why youths don't enter programs leading to engineering work.

Robby Stephenson's Tellico is billed as a collection manager though I like to think of it as a very versatile personal library system. It's a great tool for keeping track of your many cookbooks as well as Linux books, science fiction books, mysteries, and so on. That in itself would make it an extremely useful tool for keeping track of what books various friends and family have.
