Among the goals common to most open source projects is cross-platform compatibility, which allows developers to expand their user base and allows users to deploy the software more widely. But while some users enjoy having consistent software across the various platforms that they use, sometimes a browser that's optimized for a particular operating system may be a better choice. The three open source Gecko-based browsers detailed here all use their respective operating systems' native widget toolkit to render their user interfaces.

In 2002, then-US Ambassador to Peru, John Hilton, delivered a threatening letter to the Peruvian congress using his public office to act on behalf of a very powerful American private interest. The letter, which was leaked to the press, stated that the Microsoft Corporation and its chairman Bill Gates disapproved of Peru debating a proposed law, Special Bill 1609, which favored the use of free software in public administration. Hilton warned its passage would harm US-Peru relations.

Kate is a lightweight, free GNU/Linux distribution from Poland released with the goal of allowing people to play games, watch movies, listen to music, and surf the Web. While it does do these tasks, it requires a lot of handholding, manual configuration, and knowledge on a user's part. A single-CD install (with an optional second CD) is all it takes to get you up and running with Kate, but you may need to have a computer nerd handy for the setup.

DIYParts.org to provide free PC parts marketplace

Mad Penguin has announced a new website that will allow people to give away and/or computer parts for free. Currently there are already people posting parts for free on the site so there is a chance it might catch on. The announcement is here

Michael Dell sinks $100M into Red Hat

Billionaire Michael S. Dell, founder and chairman of Dell Inc., has placed a $99.5 million bet on Red Hat. Dell invested his own money in the Raleigh Linux software developer, taking the largest single chunk of $600 million in debentures offered by the company in January 2004.
