I had the privilege of being part of the Open Source GIS / MapServer User Conference last week in Ottawa (June 9-11). Many software projects end up "proving" themselves by having some sort of conference themed around them. This conference was no exception. It was a wonderfully executed and very well-organized event. Kudos to the Ottawa MapServer Users Group for their tremendous effort organizing the event!

Mono is an open source project to create a free implementation of Microsoft's .Net Development Framework as an alternative to Microsoft's Visual Studio integrated development environment (IDE). Mono takes advantage of the command line versions of the C# and Visual Basic .Net compilers freely available as part of Microsoft's .Net Software Development Kit. MonoDevelop (MD) is an offshoot from the Mono project that aims to port SharpDevelop (#Develop) to Gtk#. If it's new to you now, you'll find it's easy to set up and work with.

In an article about increased availability of Linux anti-virus software, Vnunet.com reports that Symantec CEO John Thompson said that his company would "deliver a Linux desktop antivirus solution to the market" this year.

Nokia has funded a cell phone browser project at the Mozilla Foundation, breathing new life into the open-source effort once written off as Microsoft roadkill.
