Recognizing China as one of the "fastest-growing markets in the world," the Open Source Development Lab (ODSL) announced today that it is establishing a local office in Beijing. According to the Linux advocacy group, Chinese IT research firm CCID Consulting estimates that the Linux server software market in China will explode at a compound annual growth rate of 49.3 percent over the next five years.

We Linux users have probably gotten a collective total of at least 32 trillion pieces of spam email trying to sell us Windows warez. But until now, we were always frozen out of these bargains. Dear Rob Enderle, I want to thank you, a supposedly independent IT analyst, for the keynote speech you gave recently at the SCO Forum. It certainly explains a lot of things about where you are coming from: your bias toward the Microsoft and SCO alliance, for one thing; your bias against Linux and free software for another. Open Source Risk Management (OSRM), a provider of open-source consulting and risk mitigation insurance, announced last week that it has found that there are 283 issued, but not yet court-validated, software patents that could conceivably be used in patent claims against Linux. In that same week, the German city of Munich temporarily put its planned Linux desktop migration on hold due to Linux patent concerns.

According to a report in ComputerWorld, almost half of Vienna's city employees will be able to use Linux desktops by next year. By adding the choice of Linux for desktops, the Austrian city's information services chief Erwin Gillich is hoping to save money and "become less dependent on Microsoft."
