Attack code exploiting Android’s critical Stagefright bugs is now public
Attack code that allows hackers to take control of vulnerable Android phones finally went public on Wednesday, as developers at Google, carriers, and handset manufacturers still scrambled to distribute patches to hundreds of millions of end users.
The critical flaws, which reside in an Android media library known as libstagefright, give attackers a variety of ways to surreptitiously execute malicious code on unsuspecting owners' devices. The vulnerabilities were privately reported in April and May and were publicly disclosed only in late July. Google has spent the past four months preparing fixes and distributing them to partners, but those efforts have faced a series of setbacks and limitations.

Teaching big data processing with open source software
The continuing growth of massive and diverse data volumes, and the growth of data intensive applications, has presented a need to find effective means of data management across all sectors. According to a recent report, businesses face a huge skill gap in the management of big data, with the gap growing from 400 in 2007 to 4,000 in 2012 in the United Kingdom alone. In addition to this, there is a general lack of understanding among students of current data analytics processes, which are becoming extremely important for future challenges with the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) and real-time data.

Opening Linux Even Further
Linux is for non-technical users, but how do you find them? As desktop interfaces get more restricted, Linux becomes more of a viable option for knowledge workers. The challenge is how to get them to learn about Linux. And the answer? More people talking about it.

7 co-op business principles for the open organization
What makes the concept of an open organization so great is not its novelty, but rather of the ways it borrows from already tried-and-true business and organizational practices. In other words, what makes an open organization an interesting concept (and one I think could be a model for others) isn't some unique secret. The notion of an "open organization" is really a compilation of many ideas—related to openness, collaboration, and sharing—that have proven successful time and time again, along with a simple commitment to intentionally follow them.

Linux Missing Apps Is No Longer a Reason Not to Dump Windows
One of the reasons cited by users when they are told about switching to Linux is the fact that they don't have the same kind of apps as Windows does, but is that really enough? There was a time when installing a Linux operating system was quite difficult and maintaining it was quite hard. Installing apps that required strange dependencies was a nightmare, and a distribution that crashes was difficult to repair. All of these issues are now in the past and running a Linux system is just as easy as anything else.
Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) for the Unix shell
As a command line person myself, I was very intrigued when I saw Klaatu's talk, HIG for the Unix Shell, on the upcoming All Things Open schedule. While I have always been attracted to the Unix/Linux shell because of its beautiful simplicity—yes, really—it is always nice to connect with someone who shares that appreciation. Klaatu, however, has gone further than mere appreciation by defining some of the attributes that contribute to the elegance of the shell.

Looking Ahead to New Linux/FOSS Promotional Events
Expanding Linux Venues In the South (or ELVIS): A FOSS event fit for The King, this one would be held in Memphis, as close to Graceland as possible. Everyone would be required to wear blue suede shoes. We could have Elvis impersonators demonstrating various Linux distros and FOSS programs. Heck, we could have Linus impersonators doing the same thing. And Stallman impersonators doing the same thing. And Jon ‘maddog’ Hall impersonators…you get the idea. This is definitely something worth planning, and I’m so far from Memphis. Is someone closer that could take the reins? Uh, thankyouverymuch.
Server monitoring with Munin and Monit on CentOS 7
In this article, I will describe how you can monitor your CentOS 7 server with Munin and Monit. Munin produces nifty little graphics about
nearly every aspect of your server (load average, memory usage, CPU usage, MySQL throughput, eth0 traffic, etc.) without much
configuration, whereas Monit checks the availability of services like Apache, MySQL, Postfix and takes the appropriate action such as a
restart if it finds a service is not behaving as expected. The combination of the two gives you full monitoring: graphics that lets you recognize current or upcoming problems (like "We need a bigger server soon, our load average is increasing rapidly."), and a watchdog that ensures the availability of the monitored services.
MATE Interface for Linux Systems Remains Alive and Growing
MATE, an open source desktop environment for Linux, is gaining modest but significant new features, which shows that demand remains high for traditional graphical user interfaces on Linux.
Node.js Fork is Done as Node v 4.0.0 Released
Sometimes, open-source code is forked and it never returns. Case in point is LibreOffice and OpenOffice.org as well Jenkins and Hudson. In those cased the projects were forked because developers didn't like the way thing were going and the forks have (arguably) gone on to become vastly more popular and widely deployed then the original project.
The Price of Open-source Software – a Joint Response
Should all academic software be released as open source by default? In this special guest feature, Neil Chue Hong (Software Sustainability Institute), Simon Hettrick (Software Sustainability Institute), Andrew Jones (@hpcnotes & NAG), and Daniel S. Katz (University of Chicago & Argonne National Laboratory) discuss the the role of open source software in publicly funded research.
