Ohio Linux Fest [September 25-26] – Back to the Future of Linux!
We live in interesting times. The largest automakers and banks in the United States have been getting bailed out by the government. At the same time, the digital equivalent to the assembly of the Great wall of China by volunteers from all over the world over goes virtually un-noticed. Curious. Possibly the reasons for this stem from the view that the Linux community is for the most part an invisible volunteer community. People can touch a car or a C-note. They can’t touch the Linux community -- at least, not usually. Every October in Columbus Ohio a significant portion of Linux enthusiasts and community members makes the near-impossible an attainable experience; you can come and experience the community first-hand. You can, literally, touch the community that has changed the world. Things like the backbone of the Internet, Firefox, Linux and the Apache web server are assembled by community members and if you come to Ohio Linux Fest you will gain a unique perspective of the people behind Linux and Free Software. You will see the technology and some of the faces that have made possible such a wonderful change to the digital world.
The Perspective Of TimeThis year you will gain the perspective of Time. This year, in honor of the 40th anniversary of Unix, the OLF organizers have lined up as the featured keynote speaker Doug McIlroy, a major contributor to the great grandfather of Linux and a direct contributor to code that powers many of the Unix products of today. Doug invented the concept of pipes—inter-process data streams that no true Unix / Linux geek can live without. Almost all modern operating systems either benefit directly or borrow from Doug's ideas.Doug, literally, has perspective that few can claim. Adding to this perspective will be Peter H. Salus. Peter is a venerable technological historian. Among his books are “A Quarter Century of UNIX,” “Casting the Net,” and (most recently) “The Daemon, the Gnu and the Penguin.” Rounding out these views will be a forward-looking talk by Keynote speaker and Linux Journal editor Shawn Powers. Shawns’ talk, entitled “Fixing the Economy with Linux”, will focus upon the incredible opportunity that Free Software brings to the marketplace of Today. Finally the usual OLFU professional training classes will be offered the day before the event. This is a great bargain. Where else can you go and get a days worth of training for only $350?
