The Calyx Institute is founded by Nick Merrill after 6 years under an, ultimately, illegal gag order from the FBI. He was the owner of a small ISP and had been issued a "National Security Letter" from the FBI requesting information about one of his customers. The letter also included a gag order threatening him with prison if he did not observe it. Turns out the "NSF" was not issued after a judge had reviewed evidence and the FBI was way beyond the limits the Patriot Act had established. Nick has now made it his mission in life to make user privacy the focus of a new ISP. The Tor Project and others are signed on to change the way we access the internet and telecommunications services with end-to-end encryption. "Calyx will use all legal and technical means available to protect the privacy and integrity of user data," he says.
Not directly FOSS related but of interest to our readers I think - Scott
