"The Linux and Open Source community has been very supportive of our
efforts to create this new "Certificate of Achievement" in foundational
knowledge in Linux and Open Source. However, academia, government
organizations and the IT industry throughout the world have been equally committed to the development of this new credential. Although we are recognizing the exemplary efforts of Mr. Lingnau and Mr. Gisbers at this time we also want to draw attention to the countless others who have made this program possible," said Jim Lacey, president and CEO of LPI. Mr. Lacey noted that over 700 people also participated in the "beta" exam process for Linux Essentials which is indicative of the program's broad appeal and popularity.
"It was a great experience to collaborate with LPI's global community of experts in creating Linux Essentials. We at Linup Front GmbH are fully committed to supporting the program, and we hope that our freely
available training materials will encourage many students and other
newcomers to Linux and take the plunge and go for the certificate," said Anselm Lingnau. Mr. Lingnau has been recognized for his contributions to the Linux Essentials program as a Subject Matter Expert. In addition, he is Project Leader for training media at Linup Front GmbH which has produced a number of educational resources for Linux Essentials which are available for free download. Since March, when this learning content was first made available, there has been close to 40,000 downloads in either English or German, in portable document format (pdf) or for Android phones/tablets. For download information for this material see: http://shop.linupfront.com/
"LPI's professional certifications for system administrators are well
known. However, with Linux Essentials, users are now able to receive a certificate reflecting their Linux knowledge. Young people at school and regular Linux users will be able to obtain a certificate demonstrating their skills and knowledge without the pressure to learn a lot of administrative content. Commencing this month we have added 'Linux Essentials' courses to our training schedule to support users seeking this certificate. In addition, in the new year, our local Linux User Group in Oberhausen (http://lugor.de) will offer a free, monthly, course for local Linux users interested in Linux Essentials," said Michael Gisbers of Linux-Schmie.de. Mr. Gisbers was instrumental in co-leading training sessions with Dimitrios Bogiatzoules in preparation for initial "beta" exams of Linux Essentials. "Beta" exams are an opportunity to test the psychometric validity of certification exams and it is an instrumental step in the exam development process (a full
description of this aspect of exam development can be found here:
http://lpi.org/linux-certifications/structure/exam-creation). Mr.
Gisbers also co-authored a book with Christian Hesse on Linux Essentials through Open Source Press (see:
https://www.opensourcepress.de/linux_essentials).
LPI will host further volunteer opportunities on the Linux Essentials
program during CeBIT 2013 at Hannover (http://www.cebit.de/home) and
during Linuxtag 2013 at Berlin (http://www.linuxtag.org/2013/en.html).
